Description
The fact that a photon can carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the integer multiples of ℏ has made OAM a very important basis for quantum information protocols as it provides several unique advantages. This is because an information protocol requires a discrete basis, and the OAM degree of freedom provides a basis that is not only discrete but can also be high-dimensional. In this talk, we will first describe what it means to have a photon carrying OAM. We will then describe the existing techniques for measuring the high-dimensional states in the OAM basis. and also discuss their limitations. Finally, we will describe a new experimental technique that we have developed for measuring the high-dimensional states of photons in the OAM basis through just two intensity measurements.
