Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT) was carved out of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre aiming at the service to the mankind for betterment of the quality of life through peaceful applications of radioisotope and radiation. For diagnosis and therapy of cancer, radioisotopes are produced and supplied to the hospitals in India and abroad. BRIT supplies industrial irradiators for the irradiation of surgical items for sterilization, food grains for removal of pests and enhancement of their shelf life, etc. Gamma column scanning, blockage, void, corrosion detection in pipelines, identification of location of leakage in underground pipelines, residence time distribution analysis in reactor vessels, flow rate estimation, effluent dispersion studies in surface waters and sediment transport studies on river/sea bed, bore-well interconnection studies for groundwater, studies for the enhanced recovery of oil from the oil wells, reservoir development, interconnection between oil wells, monitoring secondary recovery of oil and its effectiveness, etc. are undertaken by BRIT which save several crores of rupees of the country. Gamma chambers of various capacities are supplied for research purposes. Indigenous radiography cameras are supplied for industrial radiography and the radioisotopes are provided for the imported radiography camera. About the Speaker: Dr. Vivek Yelgaonkar dis his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from University of Mumbai and is currently heading the Isotope Application Group of BRIT at Vashi, Navi Mumbai. He has more than 35 years of experience in Radioisotope applications in chemical, petrochemical industries, refineries, oil fields and hydrology. He published over 60 papers and proceedings. He served as an expert to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in several countries and also worked as its faculty member for various regional training courses. Dr. Yelgoankar is a visiting professor in Mangalore University.
