Description
X-ray spectroscopy is a standard technique for elemental analysis. When applied to planetary body such as the Moon, it can provide elemental composition of surface, an important aspect of planetary studies. The upcoming second Indian mission to the Moon - Chandrayaan-2, will conduct X-ray spectroscopy of the lunar surface at both global as well as local scale with experiments on-board orbiter and rover. This talk will provide a brief summary of earlier attempts of X-ray spectroscopy of the Moon, overview of the Chandrayaan-2 mission and details of the two experiments. It will also outline a framework for quantitative analysis, particularly for the local scale X-ray spectroscopy by the Chandrayaan-2 rover.
