ASET Colloquium

Gender, Feminism, Physics

by Prof. Arundhati Dasgupta (University of Lethbridge, Canada)

Description
Women are under-represented in physics compared to other sciences. In Canada women comprise 12.4% of the teaching faculty in academics (2013-2014 CAUT Almanac survey). We examine gender evolution in history, evidence from neuroscience, cognition and social psychology for this under-representation. We suggest ways to improve the situation and discuss the emergence of feminine consciousness in the culture and practice of the science of physics.

About the Speaker:
Arundhati Dasgupta obtained Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics in 1999 from the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, and was Post Doctoral Fellow at Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Germany and Free University of Brussels, Belgium. Currently, she is a faculty at the University of Lethbridge and her research interests are in quantum gravity theory and phenomenology. Actively interested in the cause of encouragement of women in physics, she has research contributions to this field including the book 'Gender, Feminism, Physics' and the Ursula Franklin Commemorative Freshscrift which she co-edited with a colleague.
