The Golden Age of Stellar Astronomy

by Prof. Shrinivas Kulkarni (Caltech, USA & JRD Tata Chair Professor, TIFR)

Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
at Lecture Theater ( AG 66 )
Description
Stellar Astronomy, thanks to massive investments across the board, is now undergoing a renaissance. Gaia has dramatically changed the astrometry landscape making milli-arcsecond parallax routine; ZTF and other surveys are providing dense light curves; a number of facilities and missions (PS-1, WISE, GALEX etc) have provided a deep photometric atlas across the sky; MESA makes it trivial to compute stellar tracks; and Kepler/TESS are providing high precision light curves, revolutionizing both stellar astronomy and asteroseismology, in the process. The imminent commissioning of DESI, SDSSV, WEAVE, HERMES and other massively multiplexed spectroscopy will continue to propel this amazing revolution. The speaker will focus on the intersection between stellar astronomy & gravitational wave astronomy.
