Description
The Nobel Prizes are named after the Swede Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). Since their inception, they have not lost the charm. Every year, Nobel Laureates are announced; and media reports about them. Unfortunately, until the day, C.V. Raman remains India’s only Nobel Laureate in the field of Science. However, the situation for India is not so gloomy as it seems to be. For the past two decades, I worked on Indian Nobel Prize Nominators and Nominees. With Shaker Publisher Aachen (Germany) I published the following books: “Chemistry and Physics Nobel Prizes - India's Contribution” (2016), “Inside Story of Nobel Peace Prize Award - Indian Contestants” (2016), “India's Nobel Prize Nominators and Nominees - The Praxis of Nomination and Geographical Distribution” (2016). My book “Gandhi and the Nobel Peace Prize” was published in 2017 by Routledge Publisher. The present talk is based on “Chemistry and Physics Nobel Prizes - India's Contribution”. I intend to show: Which position has India in the world of Chemistry and Physics Nobel Prizes?

About the Speaker:

Dr. Rajinder Singh did his B.Sc. from D.A.V. College Jalandhar and ‘Diplom-Physik’ from the University of Oldenburg, Germany. He then finished a thesis at the University of Hamburg on “Nobel Laureate C.V. Raman’s work on light scattering” for which he received D.Sc. degree. He is a Researcher in the Physics Didactic and Science Communication Group, Department of Physics, University of Oldenburg. His fields of research are (i) Indian Scientists and their interaction with the Western scientific community. (ii) Nobel Prizes. (iii) “Lesser-known Indian scientists”. Dr. Singh wrote the first biographies of D.M. Bose, S.K. Mitra, B.B. Ray, S.C. Sircar and K. Banerjee. He is the co-author of “A Jewel Unearthed: Bibha Chowdhuri - The story of an Indian woman scientist”. He published 34 books (28 as a single author, and 6 as co-author with Prof. S.C. Roy) and about 150 articles. He is a member of the editorial team of Sci. & Cult., Kolkata and Scientific Voyage, Kolkata. He also served in the editorial team of the Indian J. History of Science.
