Description
Even very simple questions can spur the exploration of the vast planes and depths of physics. For example, do we really understand the dynamics of a nonrelativistic single electron confined to a plane in a uniform magnetic field? This situation is of common occurrence and paramount importance in particle physics, condensed matter physics, and 2D-electronics. The physical problem is considered elementary in standard quantum physics. I will discuss why the physics of the problem is not adequately understood, conceptually as well as in terms of the calculation of observable physical effects. Serious difficulties arise both in the classical physics of interaction potentials and in the quantum physics of the Schroedinger equation. The only way out of this challenging conundrum is the topic of this talk. Understanding the answers focuses a unique futurescope to a new micro-world.
