Description
Topology plays a central role in modern condensed matter, both in terms of defects in ordered media and also more exotic phenomena like topological insulators. How do these ideas extend to strongly nonequilibrium active systems, such as bird flocks or crawling cells, that are internally driven to exhibit dramatic collective phenomena? In this talk, I will focus on the role of topological defects in active liquid crystals, and present our recent work on understanding how active defects spontaneously move, proliferate, order and segregate in novel dynamic states, with tantalizing consequences for biological systems and synthetic active metamaterials.
