While global helioseismology has proved immensely successful in shedding light on the large-scale solar structure, and inference of rotation rate with radius and latitude, it is incapable of probing non-axisymmetric and more localized features. To that end, we develop and use the local helioseismology method known as Cartesian mode-coupling, a technique relatively in its infancy. In my work, I try to understand near-surface convection and emerging magnetic regions using mode-coupling, while concurrently helping the technique attain more maturity. I also use machine learning algorithms to further investigate the nature of flows associated with emerging magnetic regions and subsequently use those results to explore any internal boundaries, if present.
