Description
On Monday 14 September 2015 at 15:20 IST, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) observed a transient GW event, generated by a comparable mass binary black hole merger at redshift ~0.1. This is the first direct detection of gravitational waves and may be the scientific discovery of the century. We will outline the physical and astrophysical implications of GW150914, while focusing on the contributions of researchers associated with the Indian Initiative in Gravitational-wave Observations (IndIGO) consortium.
