'Shapes and symmetries of the atomic nucleus'

by Prof. Sukalyan Chattopadhyay (Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata)

Description
The deformed atomic nucleus is a classic example of a quantum rotor and is an ideal system to study the effects of rotation on a finite fermion system. These effects are manifested in the high spin level structures of the deformed nuclei which in turn can be associated to the different shapes. In this presentation, I shall describe the experiments which have been carried out at the Indian Pelletron accelerators to establish the high spin level structures of nuclei in the mass-100 region. The relation between the observed level structures and the different symmetries related to the shapes of these nuclei will be discussed.
