Description
Neuroscience today, like all scientific disciplines, builds on questions that have been asked for several decades and in certain cases for centuries. Applying the idea of the rich tradition of a "gharana" to our meandering walk through the history of neuroscience, we will discuss how today's exponents bring innovation and technology to the very questions that lead to the establishment of the neuroscience "gharana" in the first place. For example the "Grave-digger gharana" that established the details of the neuroanatomy of the brain and used art to illustrate the beauty of neurons, today has stalwarts that use genetic paints to colour the brain and understand connectivity of neuronal circuits. The goal of this talk is to trace the threads that connect modern exponents of neuroscience to their forefathers and to attempt to identify some of the major "Gharanas" of Neuroscience.
