Scattering meson and baryon resonances in lattice QCD

The confining behavior of the strongly interacting hadrons is characterized by the presence of meson and baryon resonances. Recent developments have been made in studying these resonances from first principles using lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). With a brief introduction to the techniques of putting QCD on the lattice, the results from the bench- mark lattice calculation of the lowest lying meson resonance ρ(770) where ρ → ππ in the JPC = 1−− (I = 1) channel, will be discussed. This is a precursor to the full calculation of the radiative transition form factors for ππ → (ρ) → πγ* , which is one of the first such calculations on the lattice. Moving on from meson to baryon resonances, the results from the ongoing calculation of the more challenging lowest lying baryon resonance ∆(1232) where ∆ → πN in the JPC = 3/2++ (I = 3/2) channel, will be presented. Upon extending our calculation towards γN → ∆ transition form factors, we aim towards providing important phenomenological input for neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments such as NOνA and DUNE.
