Robotics and AI for Water Management

India today is severely water-stressed, with only 1,544 m3 per capita (per year) water availability. As the population grows and water resources continue to become depleted, we are fast moving towards becoming water-scarce in the coming decades. Looking at how water is used in India, presently 50-60% of urban drinking water is lost in distribution due to leakages, 80-85% of wastewater goes untreated, directly polluting our groundwater, lakes and rivers. Even in agriculture, where 80% of India's freshwater is consumed, farmers use an estimated 2 to 4 times more water to produce a unit of major food crop as compared to countries such as China and Brazil. Fluid Robotics, a start-up founded by Silicon Valley engineers, develops advanced technologies for water infrastructure monitoring and management, and precision agriculture, with the goal of minimizing water loss and maximizing water reuse. About the Speaker: Asim Bhalerao has a Master’s degrees in Computer Science, Intelligent Robotics from the University of Southern California and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design from Santa Clara University. He has previously led engineering teams in Silicon Valley, building Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and robots for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
