Description
I briefly review the modern understanding of how global chiral symmetry can be realized on the lattice, and then discuss the much more challenging problem ofchiral gauge theories. The problem has to do with getting rid of unwanted mirror fermions. There are two standard approaches: breaking gauge symmetry on the lattice, and trying to bind the mirror fermions into heavy composites. I discuss a recent third alternative that is much more radical – and which quite possibly won’t work – to hide the mirror fermions by delocalization. In this scenario the mirror fermions are all around us and can only interact with us via instantons. One interesting feature might be a new solution to the strong CP problem.
