Results on global event properties of hadron and ion collisions by the CMS experiment

by Prof. Gabor Veres (Eötvös University)

Thursday, December 8, 2022 from to (Asia/Kolkata)
Description We will discuss measurements and results focusing on properties of hadron-hadron collisions from the CMS experiment. These results include proton-proton, proton-ion and ion-ion collisions, and we will go back in time to also mention the very beginning of the CMS physics program, which precisely dealt with such questions. Physics topics will cover charged particle distributions, angular correlations between charged particles, azimuthal anizotropy, quantum correlations between identical particles, characterization of diffraction and inelastic cross section, exclusive particle production. The aim of the presentation is to discuss the experimental methods and main ideas behind these measurements, besides the broad physics interpretation and scientific questions related to them. In order to place these results in historical perspective, some results will be shown from measurements conducted even before LHC has started up.
